Finding history is always fun for travels but I know you are tired of too many temples and shrines in Asian countries. 
Here are the most recommended 'sightseeing places' where all provides the different experience.
Asakusa/Tokyo Skytree are in Tokyo and others are in Kyoto.
If you would like to adventure more in ancient Japan, should go to Kyoto. There are more than enough historical architectures.
